Early Music Ensembles
Step back in time with early music ensembles, bringing centuries-old sounds to life with period instruments, historically informed performances, and music from the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical eras. Think delicate strings, intricate harmonies, soaring voices and the timeless works of composers like Bach and Handel. Whether you’re drawn to the intimacy of chamber music or the grandeur of a holiday oratorio, these performances offer a chance to experience classical music as audiences did centuries ago.
In Delaware, Brandywine Baroque invites you to join them “At the Pleasure Gardens,” a musical escape to the elegant entertainment gardens of 18th-century Europe. Repertoire includes three of William Hayes’ Six Cantatas (II, III and IV) as well as works by Georg Philipp Telemann and Ferdinando Tenducci. Catch a performance at The Barn at Flintwoods in Wilmington on November 6 and 8, or at Rehoboth Beach’s Lutheran Church of Our Savior on November 7. Then, get into the holiday spirit with “A Joyous Christmas,” December 4 to 6, featuring festive selections by Vivaldi, Handel and Bach. BrandywineBaroque.org

Celebrating its 40th anniversary season, VoxAmaDeus has a lineup that spans dramatic choral masterpieces and holiday traditions. On November 13, the Ama Deus Ensemble takes the stage at the Kimmel Center for Guiseppe Verdi’s “Messa de Requiem,” a powerful work famous for the thunderous “Dies Irae,” with its double chorus and orchestra. Come December, Handel’s “Messiah” returns to area churches on December 4, 6, 18 and 20. For more seasonal magic, the Vox Renaissance Consort dons period attire for “Renaissance Noël,” filling Chestnut Hill’s St. Martin-in-the-Fields with music on December 12 before heading to Bryn Mawr College’s Great Hall on December 13. It’s a milestone fall at West Chester University’s renowned Wells School of Music, which is celebrating 100 years of jazz at WCU. The story began in 1926 with the formation of a dance band that became the Criterions Jazz Ensemble, now the longest-running band of its kind in the country. From November 6 to 8, the 100 Years of Jazz Celebration brings that legacy to life with a Welcome Concert with the Criterions and Statesmen, Dance Soiree in the Sciences & Engineering Building, and the 100th Anniversary Celebration with the Criterions, an all-star alumni band and acclaimed jazz vibraphonist Stefon Harris.
The semester’s lineup continues with the Symphony Orchestra’s “A Portrait of Prokofiev” on November 21, the Wind Symphony and Concert Band’s “Dance Atlas” on November 27 and the 105th annual Holiday Program December 5, featuring the Symphony Orchestra, Combined Choirs, Criterions and WCU Pops Orchestra.
