Steve Tobin: In the Light

Art takes root at Tyler Arboretum this fall as internationally acclaimed sculptor Steve Tobin brings more than 50 large-scale, nature-inspired works to the 650-acre property. Opening October 16, “STEVE TOBIN: IN THE LIGHT” will place sculptures across 15 unique sites, creating an immersive experience that connects Tobin’s work with Tyler’s woodlands, meadows and historic landscapes.

Raised on the Main Line, Tobin has spent four decades combining science, industrial processes and recycled materials to create sculptures inspired by trees, roots, geology and the hidden structures of nature. His work in steel and bronze includes several of his signature series. Towering “STEELROOTS” reach up to 30 feet into the sky, while life-sized “BRONZEROOTS” explore the complexity and unseen strength of root systems. Mirror-like polished-steel “CLOUDS” reflects the surrounding landscape, offering visitors a chance to see the artwork — and themselves — in a new way.

The exhibition is designed to be experienced from different perspectives rather than simply viewed from a distance. You can touch the sculptures, sit inside them or lie beneath them, taking in panoramic views and the changing interplay of light and shadow.

The placement of the works throughout Tyler’s varied landscapes creates a conversation between sculpture and setting, encouraging you to notice familiar vistas and natural forms in fresh ways. Tobin describes the arboretum’s intimate natural settings as “living vignettes” well suited to his work.

And there’s plenty of time to explore. The exhibit continues through October 2027, so you can experience the sculptures as the landscape changes — from autumn color and winter stillness to spring blooms and the summer canopy.

The opening weekend, October 16–18, features guided tours, festivities, food and drink on Saturday and Sunday. A September 27 “Monumental Arrival” marks the beginning of the sculptures’ journey from Tobin’s Quakertown studio to the arboretum. Additional exhibition programs and events will be announced throughout the coming year.
